The vaguely green-fingered thoughts of a rambling rose.

May Missions

Continue to tie in climbers as the weather improves.

Keep on top of weeding, particularly before flowers appear on them.

Be vigilant with slugs and snails who will be enjoying all the lush greens.

Wipe off and squish aphids on forming rosebuds.

Keep an eye out for blackspot on rose foliage and treat early.

Watering is important, particularly for pots and containers.

Top dress containers using appropriate compost.

Prune spring flowering shrubs.

Trim half of the Photinia red robin in the front garden back to last year's growth (the new stems are red, the old is brown) to allow the rhododendron room to show off its flowers. Once the fresh red shoots emerge, trim back the other half.

Trim evergreen hedges and topiary (unless there are birds nesting - leave until August so the birds have completed their broods).

Harden off tender bedding plants by bringing plants back under cover each evening over 7-10 days. By the end of May the risk of frosts up here are low but not unheard of - be prepared to bring under cover or throw fleece over the plants.

Remove blanketweed and thin out oxygenators in the pond, leaving it beside the edges for any critters to return to the water overnight before composting.
